Would it be appropriate to say that, corportions and their financial affliation with political candidates, once an informal institution, is now, specifically after the Supreme Court ruling yesterday, a formal institution in the US Political System? I am aware that corporations and interest groups contribute to campaigns. Honestly, the only saving grace out of this ruling is that the disclosure requirement was not overturned; I do in some ways find solace in that. Not only will corporate spending in campaigns no longer be regulated, but the interests of the wealthy and “big business” will continue to have a larger and more significant role in the government. An impending and detrimental effect on the rights and voice of individuals in the political process is on the horizon. What’s that old expression? Oh, yeah. Money talks. This decision has marred the democracy that was already in jeopardy because of corporate interests.
And, that’s my rant for Jan 22, 2010.
